Talking Baseball

As a life-long Yankees fan (even in the eighties and nineties when they won about 50 games a year), I was happy to receive an email from my brother that contained this link to a news story that says that Don Mattingly's son, Preston, has signed to play with the U. T. Vols.

"Donnie Baseball" is clearly the greatest baseball player to ever live. While his numbers towards the end of his much too short career may not have been impressive (his back was messed up for the last three or four years of his career, making it difficult to swing a bat), his leadership skills always were. Derek Jeter is probably the only player that he can be compared to today. Don loved baseball, and still does, as the hitting coach for the Yankees.

If Preston loves the game as much as his dad, then he too, will become one of the greats. And I'll get to say, "I watched him play in college!"

I'm glad you're excited! But, "clearly the greatest baseball player to ever live"? You really are given to extremes aren't you?

That kind of hyperbole is what makes some of you fans more entertaining than the game itself. I sometimes wish I could get into it a little more, but if one of my kids isn't playing, I just couldn't care less. I am clearly the most apathetic fan to ever live.

I am a Yankee fan! I'm just breathing hard now that they can win 100 games. They are currently 92-60. They will have to go 8-2 from here out. I'm glad Boston is out of the wild card. The Twins and Tigers are scary to look at in the playoffs. Another Mets Yankees series?

thirstydavid: I hereby challenge you to a contest of apathy over baseball.

Some people say I'm apathetic.

I tell them I don't care.
