Three Questions

1. Does anyone come to Christ apart from the convicting work of the Holy Spirit?

2. What is the means by which the Holy Spirit brings conviction?

3. Does everyone experience conviction at some point in their lives?

1. No apart from the Holy Spirit no will come to Christ. Depravity is total.
2. The means is the Word of God through reading, or preaching, or hearing (witnessing).

3. Romans 1 says all men recognize God's handiwork and His wrath against unrighteousness but that men surpresss this knowledge. So I would say IMHO that they may fall under a type of "conviction" but not one that brings about repenctence.

1. No.

2. By illuminating the Gospel that the convictee has heard or read? The question mark is there because I don't think I know exactly.

3. Yes, if you accept that there is both a kind of conviction that leads to salvation and a kind that does not. A guilty conscience or a desire to do the "right" thing might be examples of conviction that does not necessarily lead to salvation.

But I'm just winging it, and I won't defend these answers. Feel free to refute them... :)

The question, Peter and Neil, would be whether or not that other 'conviction' (guilt?) is a conviction that is induced by the Holy Spirit in an immediate, personal sense.

1. Does anyone come to Christ apart from the convicting work of the Holy Spirit? Convicting only? How about wooing (drawing)? My answer would still be NO.

2. What is the means by which the Holy Spirit brings conviction? How much time do you have, and how many pages???

3. Does everyone experience conviction at some point in their lives? YES, no question. But obviously they don't all respond. Because of God's desire for salvation of all men he must and does convict all. Response is up to them. (Arminian? NO!)
